Shadows Of The Night: Sam Shaw Investigates

Sam Shaw is a junior journalist chasing her first by-line. To investigate robberies targeting homeless people, she ignores her editor’s warnings and spends a night posing as homeless herself.

It doesn’t stay theoretical for long.

On the streets, Sam meets Maddie, a teenage girl who knows how to survive and who is hiding more than she lets on. When people start watching them, Sam realises the thefts aren’t random and the story she’s chasing may put lives at risk, including her own.

What began as research becomes a moral test.

Shadows of the Night is a gritty YA mystery set in the city after dark. It explores homelessness, exploitation, and the danger of crossing the line between telling someone’s story and using it.

Written for older teens and adult readers, this is a fast-moving, realistic mystery with a strong female lead, real-world stakes, and no easy answers.

If you like urban mysteries with social depth and quiet tension that builds rather than shouts, this story will stay with you.

Young journalist Sam Shaw is driven by a chance to put right the injustice she sees all around her in one of the wealthiest cities in the world. When she hears that young homeless people are being targeted by thieves, she persuades her editor to let her investigate.

Pretending to be homeless, Sam soon realises that reality is not for the fainthearted and is both grateful and curious when a teenager helps her out. Her snooping sets off warning bells for the young girl, and Sam finds out how easy it would be to fail her first test.

Stories told in the dark, tears hidden from view, the life of a homeless teenager is nothing like Sam had imagined and her desire for a by-line fades as the danger on the street grows.
