Harlem, 1943. A city alive with jazz, neon, and danger. Beneath the glamour of its nightclubs and smoke-filled backrooms, the shadows stretch long.

When a numbers runner is found dead in a back booth of the Blue Lantern, a single cube of sugar on his tongue, everyone in Harlem knows whose signature that is. Everyone but Detective Al Johnson, who has learned that the obvious answer is the one somebody wants you to find.

Al doesn’t work for the mob, the radicals, or the cops. He works for Harlem. But Harlem is caught between three powers: Suge’s sugar-sweet crime empire, the fiery Black Nationals, and the ruthless Italian Mafia led by Don Vescari. Each wants the neighborhood. Each wants Al out of the way.

From smoky jazz clubs to rain-slick alleys, from gunfights in the Bronx to a showdown at the docks, the bodies keep falling and someone is playing every side against the others.

Then Suge’s son is taken, and Al becomes the one man who can force enemies to stand together, or let Harlem burn.
