Undated hardback edition, presumed first, c.1837, in lavishly decorated coloured and gilt embossed leather boards. In overall good-to-very good used condition with some minor signs of age, handling and storage - boards rubbed to edges with wear to front lower right-hand corner and spine slightly sunned. Binding tight and appears little read with no loose pages - front spine fold starting to crack but front board still firmly attached. Internally clean, no annotation - neat hand-written gift inscription to second front endpaper dated 1891; page-ends gilt, text and fine engravings (in colour) bright and clear throughout - the engravings for Queen Katherine and Helen are missing, all other illustrations present and correct. A handsome copy with exceptionally high quality illustrations. Photographs available. Not an old library book.
