- Book 1 of 2: Shang Han Lun Explained
The second edition of the “Shang Han Lun Explained” (Volumes 1 and 2) has been revised to include recent information, including a completely revised Jue Yin Chapter. The Jue Yin channel, the last of the three yin channels, is probably the most complex channel system compared to the Tai Yang, Yang Ming, Shao Yang; Tai Yin and Shao Yin channels.
Other additions to the appendices (Volume 2) include the Six Channels Identification and pulse diagnosis, the concept of “Lifting the Lid” of the teapot” and its significance in the management of many urinary diseases.
In addition, several tables have been added that give “at a glance”, quick information about the comparison of various patterns and associated formulas. These will clarify the key symptoms for each pattern and allow the clinician to quickly determine an appropriate formula for immediate use.
Greta Young is to be congratulated for her massive contribution to make Shang Han Lun accessible for learners in Chinese medicine in the western world. Indeed the Shang Han Lun is one of the four key classical texts in Chinese medicine that provides the foundations of clinical Chinese medicine learning. The revised/2nd edition is thoroughly revised book with detailed description of the Jue Yin Chapter. This is a critical text to advance your learning in Chinese medicine and I have no reservation to recommend this to all Chinese medicine students, practitioners and researchers.
Distinguished Professor Charlie C Xue, Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor, RMIT University; Inaugural National Chair, Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (2011-2021); and Member, Expert Advisory Panel for Traditional Medicine, World Health Organisation HQ (2007 to present).
The Shang Han Lun should be studied in detail by every TCM herbalist that takes himself seriously. Because of its compact lines in ancient language, the text by itself is hard to grasp. Greta Young has done an amazing job by making this major classic available to Western herbalists. Her explanations, case studies and comparisons, collected from many Lao Zhong Yi (TCM masters) and completed with her personal experience make this book unique and a must-read for anyone prescribing Chinese herbal medicine.
Loed Rakels, Senior Lecturer of Classical Medical Texts, Bo Yi Academy, The Netherlands
The study of cold damage is an essential part of every Chinese medicine practitioner’s basic training, but is also one of the most difficult because it involves grappling with a near-two-thousand year old medical text written in telegraphic style classical Chinese. The Shang Han Lun Explained fills that difficult territory between clinically useful exposition and word-by-word analysis that can swallow the reader in a morass of gritty detail. This is a book that deserves a place on the shelf of every student of cold damage.
