Shaping Health Policy : Case Study Methods and Analysis

This collection examines the role that case-studies play in understanding and explaining British health policy. Overall, the chapters cover the key health policy literatures in terms of the policy process, analytical frameworks and some of the seminal moments of the NHS. They have been written by leading health policy researchers in sociology, social policy, management and organisation studies. The collection explores and promotes the case-study as an under-used method and thereby encourages a more reflective approach to policy learning by practitioners and academics. The book will appeal to under-graduates, post-graduates and academics in social policy, public management and health services research.

Mark Exworthy is Professor of Health Policy and Management at the University of Birmingham.

Stephen Peckham is Director of the Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS) at the University of Kent and Professor of Health Policy at CHSS and the Department of Health Services Research and Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is also the Director of PRUComm.

Martin Powell is a Professor of Health and Social Policy at the University of Birmingham. Martin’s main research interest is in the British welfare state, especially the NHS. He has written or edited some 19 books, including some being translated into Chinese, Korean, and Polish. He has written over 80 peer reviewed articles, and he is a former editor of the journal ‘Social Policy and Administration’.
