Though the other characters can sometimes blend together, smart and resourceful Victoria is a standout and a terrific audience stand-in, serving as the lone voice of reason amid violent panic. Christmas can go over the top when drawing emotional scenes, but his teens look like real teenagers, and the realistic color palette makes the blood and muzzle blasts pop. These elements, along with the increasing destabilization of Lucas’ command and the efficiency of the children’s cold-blooded violence, build tension right up to the end, leaving readers eager for the next installment. --Snow Wildsmith
