History has often asked: “What makes a great king?” Psalm 78:70–72 gives a summary of David and the Lord’s choice of him as king of Israel. Those verses state, “He chose David His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from the care of the ewes with suckling lambs He brought him, to shepherd His people, and Israel His inheritance. So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them with his skillful hands.” David ruled well as a leader and proved a good influence on the people of his land and his generation as well as on thousands throughout history. Though not perfect, his character and skill shine through in many ways. History has also shown that integrity of heart, honesty, skill with people and provision, and the ability to handle difficulties, all play a significant part. Looking at the lives of people like Saul, the first king of Israel, and David, the second king, reveals that the most important element is always heart, specifically, the heart of the king. David the Shepherd King, a Following God® Character Study is a six-week journey through David’s life and his reign as king, a reign with its ups and downs, failures and successes. More than a list of historical facts, David’s life and legacy provide us with several life lessons, lessons that can serve to guide us daily, even moment by moment, whether we are serving only as “king” over ourselves or as leader over many.
