Review
A Sherlock Holmes Alphabet of Cases: Volume 1 (A to E): Five New Storiesfrom the Notes of John H. Watson, M.D. is a collection of short detectivestories written by Roger Riccard. The author's interest in Arthur Conan Doyle'sfamous detective was in no small part fostered by his own British Islesancestry, and he has written both novels and short stories featuring SherlockHolmes. In The Adventure of the Apothecary's Prescription, Watson is sent adelivery for an emergency patient that doesn't exist. Watson soon realizes thatSherlock Holmes' assistance is being sought by yet another person in need. Thistime, it's a pharmacist whose family is being held hostage to ensure hiscompliance with their captors' demands for drugs. Watson and his wife, Mary, workwith Sherlock to solve the case and help Hector Burbage's family escape theclutches of a deadly and determined foe.
Roger Riccard's collection of short detective stories, A Sherlock HolmesAlphabet of Cases: Volume 1 (A to E) will thrill any fan of Arthur ConanDoyle's classic detective fiction. The author gets the relationship betweenHolmes and Watson, and his recreation of London in their time frame works quitewell. I enjoyed both the stories in which Watson was married and living awayfrom 221B Baker Street and those in which the two sleuths are sharing livingquarters. Riccard's inclusion of archival photographs works quite well ingiving these stories an authentic and historical feel. A Sherlock HolmesAlphabet of Cases: Volume 1 (A to E): Five New Stories from the Notes of JohnH. Watson, M.D. is highly recommended.
