The Shimmer

She notices her reflection in the dark window: haggard, gray-faced, silver streaks she hasn't had time to dye. Strange shimmer in the air around her hands when she's particularly stressed—she dismisses it as exhaustion. But magic doesn't care if you're too tired, too old, or too burned out to believe.

At 42, Mira Thornwell is drowning in corporate burnout when her body finally forces her to stop. A medical crisis, a lost job, and an unexpected inheritance lead her to a village where magic thrums through the air and people actually smile. When powerful, untrained magic erupts from her hands, she faces an impossible choice: return to the empty life she left behind, or stay and learn to wield powers she never knew existed.

Enter Kieran—patient, perceptive, and infuriatingly kind. As Mira studies under the demanding tutelage of the formidable witch Elspeth, she discovers that learning magic is the easy part. The real challenge? Learning that she's worthy of happiness, that "no" is a complete sentence, and that it's never too late to choose yourself.

But old patterns die hard. When Mira's past comes calling and her magic spirals dangerously out of control, she must face the truth: you can't heal by running. As she stands at the edge of losing everything—her magic, her newfound community, and the man who sees her for who she truly is—Mira learns the most powerful spell of all: believing you deserve a second chance.
