"A Shining Light" by Henry Addison Nelson. This commemorative discourse, delivered to the North Presbyterian Church in St. Louis on February 24, 1867, honors Rev. Frederick Starr, Jr., late pastor of the church. The work provides a detailed biographical sketch of Starr, tracing his birth in 1826 in Rochester, New York, his education at Yale College and the Auburn Theological Seminary, and his ministry in Weston, Missouri, where he supported education, railroad development, and the anti-slavery cause. It recounts his opposition to slavery’s expansion, his public advocacy, and his dedication to ministerial education and the church. The discourse also covers Starr’s later pastorates in Penn Yan and St. Louis, his extensive community work, and the lasting influence of his life on church life and national reform efforts. Concluding lessons emphasize consecration to God, and the call to be more truly God’s.”
