This 1938 photographic album of Jinan City in Shandong captures a city in recovery following the severe battles between Japanese and Chiang Kai-shek?s forces from 1927 to 1929, which resulted in extensive destruction of buildings and infrastructure. The original photographs were taken by Takahashi Wataru, a high school teacher in Jinan, who also wrote the captions. A fold-out bird's-eye view map, drawn by Kaneko Tsunemitsu, accompanies the images; Kaneko, initially trained by Yoshida Hatsusaburo, later became a rival of his.Takahashi?s photographs and captions emphasise Jinan?s efforts to rebuild after the devastation. Many images show Japanese troops stationed around key buildings in the city, as well as glimpses of local residents going about their lives amidst the city's gradual recovery.
