A Short History of English Rural Life from the Anglo-Saxon Invasion to the Present Time: by Montague Fordham . With a Preface by Lord Bledisloe . and a Plan

"A Short History Of English Rural Life From The Anglo-Saxon Invasion To The Present Time" by Montague Edward Fordham. This study offers a rigorous survey of how English rural life evolved from early village communities to the modern countryside. It traces the Anglo-Saxon village structure, the emergence of the manor, the two-tier social order, and the gradual shift from customary labour to money rents, culminating in the Norman feudal system and the feudalization of land. The work then explains the growth of freedom, the enclosure movement, the rise of sheep farming, and the disruption of the peasantry, followed by the Tudor and Stuart transformations, the eighteenth-century enclosure debates, and the nineteenth-century agricultural crisis. The final sections examine the reconstruction of rural England, the rise of the squirearchy, the Poor Law, agricultural unions, and reforms in roads, education and housing. The book weaves together political, economic, and social history with appendices on statutes. Prefaces by Lord Bledisloe are included, situating the work in its early twentieth-century context. The author’s aim is to illuminate the rural past for students and general readers alike.
