Synopsis:

Brad Harris, right fielder on a little league team, relies on his older brother, Dean, the centerfielder to cover up his mistakes, but during Dean's unexplained absence, Brad must work harder on his fielding.

From School Library Journal: Grade 3-6 Twelve-year-old Brad loves baseball and his big brother Dean. Just before play-offs, Dean walks off the team, leaving Brad alone and perplexed in the outfield. In an effort to find out about Dean's seemingly inexplicable behavior, Brad is forced to reach out to his family and friends, many of whom he has ignored by his total devotion to his brother. Brad also has to face his inadequacy as an outfielder, and his development on the field parallels his increasing sense of himself as a person independent of his brother. Most of the action takes place on the baseball field. Eller's description of the building tension of the games and the intertwining personalities of the players should make this an entertaining story for sports fans. While the minor characters remain two-dimensional, Brad is well drawn, and the conflict and resolution are real. Using sports as a backdrop, Eller has woven a story of substance about growing up.
