Published anonymously in 1681, and reissued the same year under the name Sir William Dugdale, this work establishes a triple parallel between the English Civil War, the Baron s Wars, and late-16th century French Wars of Religion. Adopting the rhetoric of the outrage, Dugdale infers connections between those earlier conflicts and the unfolding Exclusion Crisis. Modern scholars have denounced the party bias of A Short View as a falling off from the high standard of Dugdale s earlier antiquarian publications. He was a royalist who obtained the office of Norroy King of Arms following the restoration. Dugdale frequently used the Bodleian Library and other Oxford college libraries for his books.
