This book attempts to be what it is called: a reading grammar. The great majority of students learn German in order to read it, but the syntactical patterns of written German, particularly scientific German, differ widely from those of conversational style. The claim that anybody who can talk German can also read German is therefore obviously unjustified. While a good teacher can use any book and material to get a conversation going, they can not teach how to read unless they have a text prepared with that end in view. The texts in this book have been selected with th that point of view in mind, to furnish material for conversation, but primarily designed to acquaint the common patterns of written German. The only writing seen is the previous owner's information on ffep, and the connotation "ist" beside ~two dozen words in Appeddix II, section Common Strong and Irregular Verbs, else a fine, clean and tight copy.
