Shouts from the Republic

Texas enjoys an almost mythic reputation, known around the world as a bastion of liberty, opportunity, and can-do spirit.

That larger-than-life reputation came in part from its immense geography, but also from its amazing history. Nowhere is that epic story more fascinating than the first half of the 1800s, the years of revolution and the Republic of Texas.

Join Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, and Stephen F. Austin in this thrilling account of how a small band of settlers turned a sparsely populated wilderness into a nation, many of them sacrificing their lives along the way. Their story and their legacy is the fight for freedom—once promised to them by the Mexican government, but snatched away by that same government, and perhaps imperiled again today.

As Blake Pfeffer writes, “The heroes of the Republic’s freedom fight shout to us in the present to engage in the process of preserving the institution of Freedom for ourselves and for our children.”

Blake Pfeffer lives in Houston, Texas, and has been enamored with Texas history since he was a young teenager, a passion he inherited from his father and his Texas-pioneering family. He and his wife Jeanne have four adult children.
