Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is an increasingly common problem, an ecological illness that eludes diagnosis because the symptoms are so diverse. Allergies to synthetic fabrics, perfumes, plastics, solvents, and other pollutants that may not affect less sensitive people at all can trigger life-threatening reactions in MCS sufferers. Buildings with tight seals and high levels of formaldehyde in cabinets or synthetic carpets can cause such sensitivities to develop. Tate also discusses the hazards of environmental tobacco smoke (even in places with designated smoking and no-smoking sections), carbon monoxide, asbestos, and other poisons.
