Reviews
Grade 5-8-- This title goes beyond the basic information available in other books on sign language to provide an in-depth examination of Ameslan (American Sign Language or ASL). The authors collaborated previously on Sign Language (Watts, 1981; o.p.), which provided a basic introduction to sign language and its history. This title explores the structuring of Ameslan signing. It examines the basic differences between written and spoken English and Ameslan, discusses the building blocks of Ameslan, and explains Ameslan's unique grammatical structuring. The major thrust of the text is to demonstrate how to form grammatically correct ASL sentences. Practice sections at the end of each chapter help readers to incorporate the concepts discussed. In addition to the practice sections, the authors include illustrated signed vocabulary in the margins or inserted appropriately into the text. Black-and-white sketches of signs are simple and clear. Hands are depicted in their appropriate placement in relation to the face and upper body; arrows show the direction of movement. A major portion of the book is a dialogue in Ameslan to which readers are invited to sign along. This is followed by a variety of games with simple directions that will enhance sign language skills and loosen readers' inhibitions for dramatic signing. A short chapter follows on sign language interpretation of poetry and songs. All in all, an intensive look at Ameslan not provided in other sign language books, for readers who have a basic knowledge of the subject. --Susan Nemeth McCarthy, Arlington County Pub . Lib . , VA
