The Signal Path: Build the Tools That Watch Everything Else

Every production incident begins the same way: a dashboard turns red, a phone buzzes, and someone asks, "What changed?" The quality of the answer — and the speed at which it arrives — depends entirely on the observability platform underneath. Yet most engineers only use observability tools. They configure dashboards, write queries, copy-paste snippets. They never see the internals.

The Signal Path changes that. It follows Lens, an observability platform built entirely from scratch. Starting with a single agent that reads raw Linux /proc files, you will build a time-series database, a structured logging pipeline, a distributed tracing engine, an anomaly detection system, and a global-scale observability data lake.

Every component is built from first principles before it is compared to the industry standard — Prometheus, Loki, OpenTelemetry, ClickHouse — that does the same thing. Sixteen chapters, each with a companion repository of working Go and Python code.

By the end, you will not just use observability tools. You will understand them at the level of the engineers who built them.
