About this Item

This Hungarian-born American surgeon is famed for his reconstruction techniques, many still used today, and he writes of his versatile medical career inn the 1943 memoir "A Surgeon's World"; in 1935 in Geneva he founded the International College of Surgeons, and in 1954 he founded the International Museum of Surgical Science; a respected amateur photographer, he penned "Creative Camera Art" (1937) and "Camera Art as a Means of Self-Expression" (1947). Signed FDC, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Atlantic City, New Jersey on 1947 June 9 and bearing "First Day of Issue" cancellation. Single 3-cent "The Doctor" stamp at upper right. Handsome green and black printed decorative cachet at left honors the American Medical Association and "100th Anniversary of Service to Humanity." To the right of this cachet, vertically, Thorek pens his flamboyant signature in black ink. Original recipient's name/address typed in at address portion.
