About this Item

Single sheet aprox. 8" by 12" with holograph listing of books with the heading "Books left not to be Sold" and signed at the bottom "Thos. Campbell". The listing consists of some 20 items including titles such as "Dictionaire Du Theatre Francois, 9 Vols.", "American Gazetteer", "Lay of the Last Minstrel", "Fox's History of England", "Lady of ther Lake" "Adair's America" and so forth. Undated. It is unclear as to the purpose of this signed listing of the poet's books; possibly it is instructions left to his executors. The document is clean with the ink bold, lightly folded in quarters. Thomas Campbel (1777-1844) was a Scottish poet and writer, a friend of Sir Walter Scott with whom he attended the University at Edinburgh. Best known for his war poems, he was quite popular during the 19th century and many of his poems were standard recitation pieces in Victorian era schools. Campbell was interred in Westminster Abbey. The Complete Works of Campbell was published by Oxford in 1908.Manuscript. Bookseller Inventory # X158
