Silent Spring, a stand against the wide-spread use of synthetic pesticides, is Rachel Carson's (1907-1964) most influential book. Fighting both cancer and chemical companies, Carson informed the public of the detrimental affects of such pesticides as DDT, thus inspiring the nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides as well as the formation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A powerful female figure, marine biologist, and conservationist, it is no surprise Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, albeit posthumously, by President Jimmy Carter. Penciled ownership of Virginia W. Hill on the half-title page dated January 1963, possibly the same Hill as the Denver philanthropist with the foundation of the same name. Light edge wear and soiling fore edge text block, multiple abrasions and tape slivers to front endpapers and ffep verso, else near fine in price-clipped, mildly rubbed and edge worn (especially spine tips), very good or better dust jacket, in mylar cover. Hardcover, top edge stained yellow, in dust jacket. Seller Inventory # 234953
