(xx) 592 pages + 32 page publishers catalog. Original cloth binding with neat headband repair. There is a degree of foxing that is mainly affecting the plates. A neat contemporary ownership inscription can be found on the front endpaper. The corner of the title page has been neatly repaired without damage to the printed surface. Hand-coloured frontispiece. 41 lithograph plates and numerous illustrations in text. The plate faced in pg 157 is present with the title 'Comparative sections of Sulurian Deposits". Included in the rear pocket is a hand-coloured map in immaculate condition by J W Lowry entitled "Geological map of the Sulurian rocks and overlying formations as developed in Wales and the adjacent parts of England". Size of map is 420 mm x 395 mm. Murchison was the first to class the Silurian System on its own, therefore establishing a definate order amongst the oldest fossiliferous formations "in order to convey a just conception of its importance in the natural succession of rocks" Challinor, Primary Literature 169.
