Four extremely scarce and fragile issues of the only newspaper associated with the Silver Shirts, a fascist, pro-Nazi paramilitary organization founded by William Dudley Pelley in 1933 and headquartered initially in Asheville, NC (Pelley s base, but which never had a large Silver Shirt membership). The newspaper began publication in November, 1933 in Oklahoma City, the Silver Legion s western headquarters, before moving to Los Angeles in January, 1934 where it was published for another seven months. As described in her article, "The Man Who Would Be Hitler, Suzanne G. Ledeboer, estimated that the press run per issue was "never more than 13,000 and at times w[as] as low as 5,000. Paid subscribers numbered 1,300, and additional copies were handed out to members of Silver Legion posts for distribution." The paper s masthead featured the group s various mottos: "Liberty Under Law, Liberation by Light, For Christ and Constitution, and Take Back the Nation from the Alien," and articles discussed Silver Shirt activities, government repression, the Jewish Question, and other Legion concerns. Offered here are Vol. 1, Nos. 1, 5-7 (Nov. 1st, 29th & Dec. 6th, 13th, 1933). Broadsheet format, each issue 4 p., illus. Issues have been folded for a long time with serious splitting evident at most folds, although all issues are intact. These will need to be handled with professional care to ensure their survival. Only Univ. of Kansas with any issues in WorldCat (where it s noted that the original issues may not be handled due to their fragility), although we note an undisclosed number of issues at the Jewish Center for History.
