Attached to the front free endpaper is a long (three page) letter dated January 1990 in response to a correspondent covering in detail why Davis chose a man as her hero, the role of Helena in contrast, the length of the chapters etc. A fascinating insight into the thoughts of the author regarding her first novel, shortly after its publication.
