Synopsis:

A solid introduction to snorkeling fun. Mask, fins, and snorkel are the three most basic items of diving equipment that can be used whether you choose to remain on the surface to make your underwater discoveries, or whether you plan to plunge into the depths. You can use the same gear no matter where your diving adventures take you. Using snorkeling gear, you can swim with the dolphins, explore sunken ships, or capture your own lobsters for dinner.

About the Author: Steve Barsky has been snorkeling and scuba diving for many years. He is experienced in sport, scientific, and commercial diving, and is an avid underwater hunter and photographer. Steve started diving in 1965 in Los Angeles and became a diving instructor in 1970. His first employment in the industry was with a dive store in Los Angeles, and he went on to work for almost ten years in the retail dive store environment. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he earned a Master s Degree in 1976 in Human Factors Engineering. His master s thesis was one of the first to deal with the use of underwater video systems in commercial diving. Steve s work was a pioneering effort at the time and was used by the Navy in developing applications for underwater video systems. Steve traveled to the North Sea in 1976 and worked as a commercial diver through 1983. He made dives from drill rigs, supply ships, and barges throughout the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and along the east coast of the U.S. His deepest working dive was to 580 feet. In 1983, Steve returned to Santa Barbara, California to work for Diving Systems International, a manufacturer of commercial diving masks and helmets. He worked in marketing for Diving Systems, producing all of the company s manuals, catalogs, and advertisements. Barsky was marketing manager for Viking America, Inc., an international manufacturer of drysuits. In 1989, Steve formed Marine Marketing and Consulting, based in Santa Barbara, California. The company provides market research, marketing plans, consulting, newsletters, promotional articles, technical manuals, and other services for the diving and ocean industry. Steve also does diving accident investigations and serves as an expert witness in diving accident litigation. Steve is an accomplished underwater videographer, photographer and author. His photos and articles have been used in numerous magazines. He has also produced equipment catalogs, advertisements, training programs, and textbooks. As a writer and photographer, Barsky s work has been published in Asian Diver, Sea Technology, Skin Diver, Offshore Magazine, Emergency, Fire Engineering, Dive Training Magazine, Searchlines, Sources, Undersea Biomedical Reports, Santa Barbara Magazine, Underwater Magazine, and many other publications. Steve and his wife, Kristine, have produced nine underwater DVD videos on topics ranging from California Marine Life Identification to Careers in Diving. You can see previews of Steve s DVDs on his website at hammerheadpress.com. Steve lives in Ventura, California, where he regularly dives the Channel Islands, and around the world, with his wife Kristine, a marine biologist.
