Grade 7 Up. In this fascinating book, Newlin uncovers the "magic" behind the workings of a kaleidoscope. He discusses the mirror system inside the instrument and the "stuff" that is put into the end chamber to create the images. Chapters cover suitable materials for mirror systems, basic instructions for assembling different types, lenses and eye pieces, barrels and other bodies, and "stuff" for the object chambers. Step-by-step directions for 24 projects, representing different types of kaleidoscopes, are presented complete with helpful hints and suggested variants. Be forewarned though?Simple Kaleidoscopes are not simple to make. Readers will need help in gathering materials and following directions. However, even if young people don't create their own scopes, they will find the full-color and black-and-white photographs interesting and will be intrigued by the incredible visual images the instruments create.?Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
