Step into the timeless and fascinating world of amateur radio with *The Simple Science of Ham Radio*, a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand guide designed for beginners, hobbyists, and curious learners alike. In an age dominated by smartphones and the internet, this book takes you back to the powerful fundamentals of wireless communication—revealing how people can connect across neighborhoods, countries, and even continents using nothing more than radio waves and the right equipment.
Laner S. Darwin simplifies the science behind ham radio, transforming what often seems like a complex technical field into something approachable, practical, and genuinely exciting. Whether you have no prior experience or you’ve always been intrigued by how radios work, this book provides a strong foundation without overwhelming you with unnecessary jargon.
Inside this book, you’ll discover:
* How radio waves are created, transmitted, and received
* The meaning of frequency, wavelength, and signal propagation—explained in simple terms
* How ham radio operators communicate over short and long distances
* A clear breakdown of essential equipment, including transmitters, receivers, and antennas
* How to set up your own basic ham radio station
* The different modes of communication, including voice and digital signals
* Practical tips for improving signal clarity and range
* The importance of ham radio in emergency situations when other systems fail
More than just theory, *The Simple Science of Ham Radio* connects scientific principles with real-world application. You’ll gain insight into how geography, weather, and atmospheric conditions affect radio signals, and how experienced operators use this knowledge to communicate more effectively.
This book also highlights the unique global community of amateur radio operators—people who share knowledge, provide support during disasters, and keep this valuable skill alive across generations. You’ll come to understand why ham radio remains relevant, reliable, and even essential in today’s technology-driven world.
Written in a friendly and engaging style, Laner S. Darwin ensures that each chapter builds your confidence and understanding step by step. By the end of this book, you won’t just know *what* ham radio is—you’ll understand *how* and *why* it works.
Whether your goal is to start a new hobby, prepare for emergency communication, or simply expand your knowledge of wireless technology, *The Simple Science of Ham Radio* is the perfect place to begin.
Clear, practical, and inspiring, this guide opens the door to a skill that connects people beyond boundaries—powered by nothing more than science and curiosity.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
