Homer grows up knowing he looks different than most kids in his neighborhood. Although both his parents are African American, his appearance more closely resembles a Caucasian. As he struggles to fit in with others in his African American race, Homer faces prejudice and bullying by those who brand him “the white kid,” until he decides to fight back, transforming himself and his attitude forever. On his wayward journey to removing himself from his surroundings, Homer feels his looks are a curse which sets off a series of horrific events that test all his emotions. To others it seems as though Homer has been given all the keys to unlock the American Dream. Unfortunately, they are unaware of his sins as a youth. As Homer relives his experiences, joys, and challenges through the metaphorical structure of eighteen holes of golf, he shines a light on his determined quest to overcome his outcast label, accept his mixed heritage, seek forgiveness, and-more importantly-love himself.
Sins of a Mulatto Outcast tells the compelling tale of one man's struggles to embrace his uniqueness in order to achieve happiness in life.
From the Author:
For some reason writing this book came easy to me. I was experiencing a midlife crisis while approaching forty. I realized the mid-point of life is not fifty years of age but right now. I discovered I haven't really fulfilled the life I truly want, been places I want to visit, or really doing the stuff that matters with my wife. I feel I am not living. It seems everything I am doing is not rewarding. The everyday stress of corporate America along with being a father was beginning to devour my spirit. My marriage was failing and I was not sure why. I was becoming inept socially due to feeling like a failure.
I decided to break myself down to find the root cause of my unhappiness instead of blaming others. I never been able to verbalize how I am feeling, but I have always had the ability to express myself through writing. I drifted away from the principles I was taught from my relatives and people that influence me most growing up. I begin to take inventory of my life and a storyline develops as I begin to note some things from my past. Though the majority of the content in this book is fiction and some of the characters are not real, it is based on minutiae from my childhood I have held onto for too long. A love story develops by reminiscing on how I fell in love with my wife when we first met. The main character is a mirror image of me and the struggles I endure growing up as a mulatto in a predominantly urban environment. I was always aware of my ethnicity growing up but it was hard to get others to realize and understand. I also reference some of the deadly sins that deceived me as a youth. I am not a very religious person but I do have a relationship with God. I am fortunate I was taught this at a young age even though it took me a while to get a grasp on what I was seeing in the mirror and the events that transpired as a youth.
In this book, I hope the reader will see prejudice does not come from one race. All races have their preconceptions in some form or another. A person should be defined by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. This book should also bring awareness as to how one's looks can be deceiving to those who are ignorant about the evolution of race in America. Homer's, the main character, journey inspires all to understand that it is not where you start but where you finish. Most of us are afraid to start a journey because it does not conform to the acceptance of others. Sometimes we have to be willing to accept the criticism and follow our own path. Homer cannot be faulted for the hand he receives. However, he finds difficulties learning to play the cards he has been dealt.
Golf is a piece of my life that keeps me sane. It is a game no one will conquer. You can only contain the game. The ups and downs of playing the game of golf are the same as Homer's journey of emotions.
Memphis is the setting of the story. Memphis is a wonderful city but is tarnished by the racial violence of the sixties. Just like all urban areas, bad areas are sprinkled around the city. Memphis gets a bad reputation from the media due to violence and drama that is reported to bring in viewers. However, what is portrayed on television only shows the actions of the minority in this city. For those who know Memphis well, the majority of us who grew up in the area have become extraordinary citizens. Memphis has produced doctors, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and entertainers. It is a shame leadership over the last few decades has prevented the metropolitan area from becoming a hotbed like Dallas, Nashville, or Atlanta. Due to limited opportunities, most of the talent produced here has moved to more prosperous areas where opportunities are abundant. Memphis a jewel and the only thing negative about this great city is the summer weather.
