The book chronicles the life, creative genius, and immense cultural influence of Sir Edwin Landseer, the definitive animal painter and sculptor of the Victorian era. Manson traces Landseer's journey from a child prodigy to a close favourite of Queen Victoria, analysing his unique ability to infuse animal subjects with human-like emotion and narrative weight. The biography details the creation of his most famous masterpieces?including the iconic stag painting The Monarch of the Glen and the monumental bronze lions guarding Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square?while honestly examining the severe mental health struggles and breakdown that overshadowed the artist's final years.
