Just Sit With Me: When Understanding Is Misunderstood

What happens when a listener fails to receive your lived experience with precision and care?

Just Sit With Me is a short, deeply personal book about the harm caused by failed understanding. It explores what happens when your lived experience is heard, interpreted, corrected, or explained away before it has been truly received.

That kind of failure is not only frustrating. Over time, it can become lonely, destabilizing, and exhausting. You may begin to over-explain ordinary experiences, rehearse simple truths as if preparing legal testimony, or search for outside confirmation before trusting your own reality.

Drawing from lived experience, neurodivergent insight, and original research, M. Ian Niad explores the difference between hearing someone’s words and receiving the reality those words are trying to carry.

This book is for anyone who has ever needed someone to stop fixing, stop explaining, stop moving ahead, and just sit with them.

M. Ian Niad is a writer and independent researcher working at the intersection of neurodivergence, access, and human-AI collaboration. His work explores what happens when people are misunderstood, overwhelmed, or unable to act on what they know, and how systems can be designed to make action possible again. With a background in software engineering, Ian approaches cognition, communication, and support as design problems rather than personal failures. His writing develops language for lived experiences that are often misread, minimized, or explained away before they are received.Blending personal testimony with systems thinking, Ian focuses on the gap between internal reality and external interpretation. Rather than offering quick fixes, his work aims to create conditions where people can be understood, supported, and able to function on their own terms.
