Situating Global Art

In recent years, the term global art has become a catchphrase in contemporary art discourses. Going beyond additive notions of canon expansion, this volume encourages a differentiated inquiry into the complex aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, epistemological and socio-economic implications of both the term global art itself and the practices it subsumes. Focusing on diverse examples of art, curating, historiography and criticism, the contributions not only take into account (new) hegemonies and exclusions but also the shifting conditions of transcultural art production, circulation and reception.

Nanne Buurman is research fellow at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in
Munich.

Birgit Hopfener (Dr. phil.) ist Associate Professor an der Carleton University, Ottawa, CA.

Barbara Lutz (Dr. phil.) ist Kulturwissenschaftlerin und arbeitet im Jahr 2022 als Kunstvermittlerin auf der documenta fifteen. Sie war Mitglied im Promotionskolleg »Produktionsräume Ästhetischer Praxis« des Fachbereichs Kulturwissenschaften und ästhetische Kommunikation an der Stiftung Universität Hildesheim und hat am Institut für Theorie der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) promoviert. In ihrer Arbeit setzt sie sich auf Basis einer diskriminierungskritischen Bildungsarbeit mit Konzepten und Methoden der Transkulturalität im Bereich der Ausstellungspraxis und der Vermittlung von Kunst in globalen Zusammenhängen auseinander.
