Just the slightest of fraying to the top of the spine. A fit of foxing on the inside covers. ; Book is in excellent condition - exceptions noted. A beautiful copy with 61 illustrations on steel and wood. Bright gilt images on front cover and spine over green, plaid boards. Tissue guards on some of the engravings. Maclise, Gilbert, Harvy, and Cruikshank. Anna Maria Hall (6 January 1800 30 January 1881) was an Irish novelist who often published as "Mrs. S. C. Hall". She was born in Dublin but left for England at age 15. The author writes "In these 'Sketches' I have aimed at a higher object than mere amusement, - desiring so to picture the Irish character, as to make it more justly appreciated, more rightly estimated, and more respected in England. . . . It has been my steady purpose, and zealous wish, to justice to the many estimable qualities of the Irish peasantry."
