About the Author

Lawrence Smith aka “Skip” was born and raised in Washington, DC. He was five years old when he received his first five-gallon fish bowl. He received a gold fish that he and his mother named “Big Fish.” It was love at first sight for him and at that very moment, his passion for fish developed. At age fifteen he was introduced to Cichlids by his child-hood friend named Bill. Skip’s first Cichlid was a “Red Oscar” the most popular Cichlid in all of the local pet stores at that time. His passion continued to intensify with the acquiring of different types of Cichlids such as: Jack Dempseys, Convicts and Red Devils. He began to save his school lunch money and took many trips down to Larry’s Fish Bowl located in Northeast Washington, DC to purchase his Cichlids. This was the birth of his Cichlid hob-by. Years later his beloved uncle “Sterling” (Rest in Peace) introduced him to a man named Demus, aka; “The Godfather of Cichlids.” Demus was called “The Godfather of Cichlids;” because he owned a vast variety of Cichlids such as: Doviis, Umbees, Trimacs and many others. During the 1980’s and 1990’s those Cichlids were considered rare in the DC Metropolitan area and were difficult to acquire. His interest and passion devel-oped into a beloved business known as “Skips Aquarium Maintenance Services, LLC.” His expe-rience in the business with Local Pet Stores, Churches, Funeral Homes, Barber Shops, Law Of-fices and personal clients created a demand to ob-tain rare Cichlids for their aquariums. Raising and breeding his own rare Cichlids, he was able to meet the needs of his clients; thus, the creation of Real Hard Cichlids™ Aquatic Kennels came to life. Skip’s Aquarium Maintenance Services, LLC and Real Hard Cichlids™ Aquatic Kennels mission is to show that the Cichlid hobby can be fulfilling and rewarding. Lastly, his desire is to expose children, adolescent, as well as, others to this very fulfilling hobby. Skip’s plan is to be a leading example of how to embrace aquatic life.
