On the title page 'First Edition, First Thousand' is stated and under the name of the publisher is the date 1908. On the verso copyright page, the only date is 1897. The publisher apparently just left the 'First Edition' statement in later editions. The book is rated Near Fine. As you can see from the photos, the covers are in very decent condition. There's a tiny scuff on the front cover, another tiny one on the rear cover. There is some wrinkling at the top and bottom spine ends. There is a diagonal crease or impression on the rear cover. The edges and corners are in solid shape. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The page edges are clean. The inside covers and end papers are black. They are quite clean and in good condition. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are nicely tight throughout. They are also exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through without seeing any instances of soiling. And I'm not seeing any creasing or dogeared corners. No markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. So it's a very solid book in very nice condition. There are a great many graphs and diagrams throughout. The chapters are titled General Principles; Crank, Connecting Rod, and Eccentric Rod; Valve Diagrams; Steam and Exhaust Ports---Bridges---Steam-Pipes; General Problems in Valve Design; Rockers and Bell-Cranks; Design of a Plain D-Valve; Valve and Eccentric Rods, Steam-Chest; Design of an Alien or "Trick" Valve; Design of a Double-Ported Valve; Valve-Setting; Shaft-Governors----General Principles and Types; and Shaft-Governors--- Analysis of Principles.
