About this volume
"The Era of Small-Incision Cataract Surgery" is a comprehensive historical and technical account of one of the most groundbreaking surgical innovations in ophthalmology. Beginning with early cataract extraction techniques, the book explores the pioneering work of Dr. Charles Kelman, who revolutionized eye surgery in the 1960s by inventing phacoemulsification—a technique that transformed cataract removal into a safer, more efficient procedure.

Drawing from archival research, first-hand interviews, and rare historical insights, this book delves into the evolution of small-incision cataract surgery, the development of intraocular lenses (IOLs), and the resistance Kelman faced from the medical establishment. It also highlights how this technique grew from a controversial idea to the gold standard of modern cataract surgery, with over 28 million procedures performed annually worldwide.

A must-read for ophthalmologists, medical historians, and surgeons, this book captures the scientific breakthroughs, challenges, and triumphs that shaped the field of ophthalmic surgery. Whether you are a medical professional, researcher, or simply fascinated by medical advancements, this detailed account provides an engaging and informative look at how innovation, persistence, and vision transformed eye care forever.
