Smart Operation for Power Distribution Systems: Concepts and Applications

This book discusses the operation of electrical distribution systems, presenting contemporary concepts and applications with a focus on integration for smart operation and grids. The authors address the main concepts and techniques of active management of smart electrical distribution system operation, including state estimation, self healing, volt-var control, protection systems, operations planning, and commercial and emergency dispatch. From each topic, an overview of concepts are given together with examples related to the management of these systems, thus providing a valuable resource for the design, implementation and management of efficient and truly sustainable smart systems.

Daniel Pinheiro Bernardon is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil. IEEE Senior Member. Bachelor’s at Electric Engineering from Federal University of Santa Maria (2000), master’s at Electric Engineering from Federal University of Santa Maria (2004) and doctorate at Electric Engineering from Federal University of Federal de Santa Maria (2007), Brazil. He has experience in Electric Engineering, focusing on Power Systems, working on the following subjects: distribution networks, reliability, multi-criteria decision-making methods and Smart Grid.

 Vinicius Jacques Garcia holds a bachelor's degree in Informatics - Bachelor's degree from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2000), a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (2002) and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (2005). He held his postdoctoral degree at the State University of Campinas from November 2005 to September 2006. He is currently associate professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria. He has experience in the area of ​​Production Engineering, with emphasis on Operational Research, working mainly on the following topics: heuristics, multicriteria optimization, distribution systems, and power system operation.
