The Smile That Broke: How We Learned the Difference Between a Bully and a Manipulator

Because some smiles aren’t kind—they’re calculated.

The Smile That Broke is not just a story—it’s a lifeline for children navigating the invisible line between bullying and manipulation.

In this powerful and emotionally grounded narrative, a group of children learns how to recognize the dangerous difference between a bully who pushes and a manipulator who pulls strings from the shadows. What begins as confusion over a classmate’s charm quickly turns into a deeply personal discovery about emotional safety, trust, and how even a smile can carry hidden harm.

Through lived experiences, honest conversations, and courage in the face of fear, these kids learn to stand together, speak up, and protect one another. Told in a relatable, age-appropriate way, this book helps children understand that not all bad behaviour is loud—and not all smiles are safe.

Written by Garrick D. Pattenden, a seasoned educator, historian, and children's author, The Smile That Broke provides real-world insight into manipulation, gaslighting, and emotional control. This special Children’s Edition balances seriousness with empathy, empowering young readers to notice red flags, build stronger boundaries, and foster kindness rooted in truth.

A must-have for every home, classroom, and counselling shelf.
