These first three volumes introduce a new 12-volume series, The Smithsonian Guide to Historic America . The remaining nine volumes are scheduled for publication this spring and in early 1990. The general editor, Roger G. Kennedy, is executive director of the National Museum of the Smithsonian. The books are arranged geographically in order to assist the traveler in finding sites of interest in nearby areas. In addition to historical background and descriptions, which are the heart of the series, addresses and phone numbers are supplied. The indexes are exceptionally thorough, listing geographical locations, names of landmarks and sites, important persons associated with a site, and historical events. The book is an ideal size for travel at 5 8 . The detail, scope, magnitude, and depth of background and research are unparalleled in quality; each volume is a jewel. Expert research, writing, photography, and cartography have gone into the books with the achieved goal of being accessible on a nontechnical level. This series is glowingly recommended for both reference and travel collection. However, price may keep these volumes out of range of smaller library budgets. BOMC selection.
