Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections: Volume 3

Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections by J. L. LeConte is a mid-19th-century entomological reference that surveys described North American Diptera (including Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies). It aims for completeness of described species and their localities rather than a full synonymical catalogue, and it serves as a foundational cross-reference for North American dipterology. The work opens with a Preface outlining scope, publication practices, and collecting guidelines, followed by an extensive Authorities section that compiles and analyzes major sources (Say, Macquart, Wiedemann, Harris, Walker) and details how synonyms and cross-references are handled. The Catalogue itself proceeds taxonomically through Diptera families such as Tipulariæ, Stratiomyæ, Acroceridæ, Midasidae, Bombyliariæ, and others, listing genera and species with geographic localities (Georgia, Nova Scotia, Missouri, Florida, Mexico, West Indies) and citations to original descriptions and later catalogues. Editorial emphasis is on completeness over strict systematic arrangement, with notes on where modern revisions might alter classifications. The volume exemplifies mid-19th-century bibliographic practice and Smithsonian leadership in standardizing North American dipteran knowledge, and it signals a broader scholarly infrastructure, including an index of learned societies.
