The Smruti Chandrika On The Hindu Law Of Inheritance: A Work Of Especial Authority Of The Madras School by Devanna-Bhatta is an English translation and edition of the Smriti Chandrika, a medieval Hindu law text on inheritance valued as an authority within the Madras School. The volume presents the law of hereditary property and partition as understood in South Indian practice, including Menu’s definition of heritage, contrasts with Mitakshara and other authorities, and detailed discussion of partition during the father’s life, after the father’s death, and the rights of widows, unmarried daughters, and other heirs. The translator-cum-editor, T. Kristnasawmy Iy ers, supplies extensive notes, cross-references to canonical texts (Mitakshara, Vyavahara Mayukha, Jimuta Vahana, the Digest) and Privy Council and Madras High Court decisions, and adds summaries, tables, and an apparatus to aid scholars and practitioners.
