Social Movements and Culture (Volume 4) (Social Movements, Protest and Contention)

Reflecting the recent surge of interest in culture, this volume brings together top researchers in the field of social movements whose work represents the major approaches to movement analysis from a cultural perspective. The contributors address such issues as various approaches to culture; how movements are affected by the culture of the larger society in which they act; and the internal cultures of these movements. The volume includes a critical survey of the cultural analysis of social movements, as well as a section on methodology.

Hank Johnston is lecturer at San Diego State University. He is the founding editor of Mobilization; the author of Tales of Nationalism: Catalonia, 1939-1979 (1991); and coeditor, with Joseph Gusfield and Enrique Larana, of New Social Movements: From Ideology to Identity (1994).

Bert Klandermans is professor of applied social psychology at Free University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published widely on social movements in journals such as the American Sociological Review, Sociological Forum, and the European Journal of Social Psychology. He is the editor of the Social Movements, Protest, and Contention series for the University of Minnesota Press.
