The Social Structure of High-Energy Physics Experiments at Fermilab: A Physics and Detector Driven Analysis

For those enamored by questions regarding the mysterious nature of matter, energy, and the building blocks of our universe, few places hold more significance than Fermilab—a premier particle physics and accelerator laboratory integral to the discovery of the bottom and top quarks and Higgs boson. Mark Bodnarczuk plunges the reader into the world of high-energy physicists and their experiments at Fermilab with an inside look at the give-and-take challenges of scientists at work.

Fermilab operated the highest-energy particle accelerator in the world, so competition for use of its particle beams grew intense. Gaining access to a beamline forced physicists to navigate a set of interrelated resource economies like proton economics and experimental real estate. They negotiated with these commodities and fought over them.

Bodnarczuk also explores how his physics and detector driven analysis could be used to study the enormous collider experiments currently running at CERN, and those proposed for CERN’s Future Circular Collider, the largest scientific enterprises on the planet. Thoughtfully written with a penetrating philosophical edge, The Social Structure of High-Energy Physics Detectors at Fermilab transports readers on an insightful journey that will intrigue both scientists and those curious about the inner workings of ground-breaking research.
