Contacts, and Social Values and Valuations. Inter mediate between the two groups will be a volume on Social Progress intended to set forth the more general applications of sociological knowledge. In addition to the present volume on Social Work in the Light of History, books that will fall in the second group are being prepared on important subjects, including Sociology and Edu cation, Problems of Population, and Criminology. While the series when completed will present the logi cal and systematic character just described, the order of publication will depend upon the time when the different volumes are brought to completion by their authors. It is the intention to preserve the freedom of the writers to work under the conditions by which they can achieve the best results. Each book will be complete in itself, but planned with reference to all the others, so that the series as a whole will fulfill as nearly as possible the ideal of a logical summary of the product of the intellectual movement which goes by the name Of sociology.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Social work has been a tirelessly evolving field. Early incarnations of providing aid and carrying out social services were observed in the church and later in politics with the rise of public relief systems. The 19th century's social movements were largely pioneering and offered little in the way of professional training. The first formal training courses for social work were developed in the early 1900s, mirroring the development of professional education in other areas. After decades of growth and standardization, the social work field is on the cusp of being recognized as a true, learned profession, with a focus on adjusting personal relationships and resolving conflict, using functional tests to apply scientific methods and principles. This book follows the lineage of social work's development, examining the ways in which the field has responded to changes in society over time, from the apprenticeship system and charity model to the scientific methods and professionalized focus of the present day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
