Sociology Its Development and Applications (Classic Reprint)

Uncover how sociology explains religion’s origins, evolution, and place in modern society.

This approachable study looks at how religious life shapes communities, and how sociological ideas can illuminate ethical and social change without assuming religious beliefs themselves.

Religion is treated as a social institution to be examined alongside history, economics, and culture. The text traces how environmental and economic conditions influence belief, practice, and organization, from ancient rites to contemporary forms. It also examines the role of the priestly class, the dangers of doctrinal rigidity, and how new ideas can reshape faith across civilizations.

• How religion develops from primitive fear to complex spiritual life
• How environment and economy shape religious beliefs and practices
• The social function of priesthood and ritual, and why rigidity can hinder progress
• The relationship between religion and sociology as you study social change

Ideal for readers of sociology and social science, this edition offers clear insights for students and curious minds alike.
