This fourth volume in the "Philosophers and Freedom" series brings to light one of the most decisive moments in the history of philosophy: the legacy of Socrates and the emergence of Plato's Academy. Based on the classic work by Diogenes Laërtius, philosopher and psychoanalyst William Marcos presents a new translation, carefully adapted, annotated, and organized for a contemporary audience.
Diogenes Laërtius, a third-century AD author, was one of the greatest compilers of the lives and works of ancient philosophers. In his narrative, we find not only the teachings and doctrines of the Socratics, but also anecdotes, biographical details, and reflections that allow the reader to see philosophy as a practice of life and not merely as a theory.
In this edition, Socrates' accounts—his simple lifestyle, his incisive dialogues, his unjust condemnation, and his choice of death in the name of truth—gain new strength, combined with the greatness of Plato, who transformed the Socratic method into a lasting philosophical system. Through them and their followers, we witness the birth of a tradition that still inspires those seeking to understand the essence of freedom, justice, and the good life.
With updated language and didactic commentary, this work is intended for students, teachers, and philosophy lovers who wish not only to learn about, but also to engage in dialogue with, the great masters of Western thought. More than a translation, this book is an invitation to revisit philosophy as an exercise in courage, critique, and authenticity.
