Soda Core: Practical Data Observability and Quality Checks

"Soda Core: Practical Data Observability and Quality Checks"

Data observability stops being a buzzword the moment you have to explain a broken dashboard at 2 a.m. This book is written for experienced data engineers, analytics engineers, and platform teams who need reproducible, auditable ways to prove that critical datasets are correct, fresh, and fit for purpose—without turning quality into a brittle pile of ad hoc SQL. It adopts an engineering mindset: define expectations precisely, validate them continuously, and make failures actionable.

You’ll learn Soda Core’s scan-based execution model end to end—how scans connect, compute, evaluate, and report—and how to configure secure, least-privilege connectivity across real environments (local, CI, containers, orchestrators). The core of the book is Soda Core v4’s contract-first approach: authoring and versioning Data Contracts as the interface between producers and consumers, controlling schema drift, and encoding high-value expectations (completeness, uniqueness, validity, freshness, volume, and distribution). You’ll go deep on how checks become SQL and metrics, and how to engineer for cost, performance, and warehouse safety.

The final arc closes the operational loop: diagnostics and failed-rows workflows, threshold tuning and baselines to reduce alert fatigue, and practical CI/CD and orchestrator patterns (gate, warn, quarantine). Readers should be comfortable with SQL, modern warehouses/lakehouses, and production delivery practices; version-awareness and v4 migration considerations are treated as first-class throughout.
