About this title

Synopsis

Ye Solace of Pilgrimes draws readers into the streets and shrines of fifteenth-century Rome. It reads like a map. John Capgrave's Description of Rome, circa A.D. 1450, marries the immediacy of a medieval travel narrative to the utility of a historical pilgrimage guide, noting medieval Rome landmarks and tracing the christian pilgrimage routes that shaped devotional movement through the city. With a frontispiece illustrating the author's handwriting and the character of an illustrated manuscript facsimile, the Capgrave pilgrimage account stands at the intersection of medieval travel literature and fifteenth-century travel writing: part itinerary, part antiquarian observation. The prose is compact and unadorned, making topography, ritual and relics accessible to casual readers, while the text's period detail offers scholars and students material for close reading. Classic-literature collectors and collectors of rare books will also recognise the appeal of a faithful edition that honours provenance and presentation without sacrificing readability. Historically significant, this Description sheds light on renaissance Rome history and the broader tapestry of fifteenth-century Europe, supplying context for studies of urban piety, monument cults and movement of pilgrims. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Measured and portable, this edition restores a quietly luminous voice from late medieval devotion for new audiences, and it belongs equally to reading lists, reference shelves and the collections of those who prize medieval travel narrative as both literature and historical testimony. Accessible yet authoritative, the edition invites armchair travellers, postgraduate researchers and curators alike. It's a rare intersection of readable fifteenth-century travel writing and documentary value: students tracing christian pilgrimage routes will find evocative particulars; enthusiasts of renaissance Rome history can follow the city's built memory; collectors of rare books will appreciate an edition that honours manuscript provenance. Elegant enough for display, practical enough for study, Ye Solace of Pilgrimes restores a medieval voice that continues to inform how we read pilgrimage across fifteenth-century Europe.
