Solar radiation is the fundamental engine powering nearly every process on Earth — from atmospheric circulation and ocean currents to photosynthesis, crop growth, and human health. Yet in an era of rapid climate change, understanding its behavior, interactions, and consequences has never been more vital. This comprehensive academic reference offers a systematic journey through the science and real-world impacts of solar energy. Beginning with the physics of the Sun — its spectrum, blackbody radiation, and 11-year cycles — the book explores how solar radiation interacts with Earth's atmosphere through absorption, scattering, and the protective ozone layer. It then examines its central role in shaping global climate, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity hotspots, and regional patterns such as monsoons and deserts. The volume delves deeply into human dimensions: the dual nature of UV radiation in vitamin D synthesis versus skin cancer risk, heat stress and seasonal affective disorder, and the profound influence of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) on agriculture, evapotranspiration, and food security. Dedicated chapters cover cutting-edge renewable energy technologies — photovoltaics, concentrated solar power, passive solar design, and innovations like perovskite cells and agrivoltaics — while addressing grid integration, storage, and economic viability through levelized cost of energy (LCOE). In the context of anthropogenic climate change, the book analyzes radiative forcing, ice-albedo and water-vapor feedbacks, shifts in solar resource availability, and controversial solar radiation management (SRM) proposals. It also highlights adaptation strategies, equity in solar energy access for the Global South, and ethical considerations for a just transition. Richly illustrated with diagrams, satellite data, case studies (Amazon rainforest, coral bleaching, Maunder Minimum), and supported by the latest IPCC assessments, satellite observations, and primary literature, this book balances rigorous theory with practical applications. Pedagogical features include student exercises, laboratory activities, and learning objectives.
