Solomea: Star of Opera's Golden Age

Her voice captivated millions. Her legacy muted by the Iron Curtain. Her story nearly forgotten - until now.

Once celebrated as the leading dramatic soprano during opera's Golden Age, Solomea Krushelnytska's remarkable achievements faded into obscurity behind the Iron Curtain.

Now, in this inspiring award-winning biography, Solomea's grand-nephew brings her extraordinary story to life, shedding light on an overlooked legacy.

Born into a Western Ukrainian village in 1872, Solomea battled her way to stardom, performing with legends like Giacomo Puccini, Arturo Toscanini, and Enrico Caruso. She famously rescued Puccini's Madama Butterfly from its failed debut, starring in over 100 performances, ensuring its place as one of the most beloved operas of all time. She performed in opera houses worldwide, embarked on a concert tour singing in eight languages, and championed Ukrainian culture.

As the Iron Curtain unfolded, her international career was abruptly halted, while her colleagues continued to enjoy lasting success in the West. Yet, despite these constraints, she remained a revered figure in her homeland, dedicating her later years to nurturing the next generation of vocal talent where her success began.

Told from the perspective of her grand nephew Andriy Semotiuk, this biography offers intimate details on her rags-to-riches odyssey, surviving the Nazi and Soviet occupations of Ukraine, and her enduring legacy on opera and culture. This story is a triumph of the human spirit, a testament to her dedication to art, and an inspiration to people everywhere.
